Moraga, CA - Former Saint Mary's men's golfer Joe Lanza cashed is with his first professional victory on Thursday. Lanza posted a score of 10-under par at the Trilogy Golf Club at Power Ranch in a Grey Goose/Gateway Tour event. Lanza shot rounds of 65-71-67 (203) and finished in a 3-way tie for first place. Lanza turned pro following the conclusion of his senior season in 2005. He's played in a number of events since his graduation and the win at the Trilogy Golf Club is first professional win. His win on Thursday follows a 12th place finish at the 2006 Yes! Golf BCR Challenge by BG Products in Austin, TX last weekend. Lanza battled for first place all week, after he was tied for third after 18 and tied for second place after the second and third rounds. He moved into first place in the final round after opening the way with birdies on three of his first five holes.
The week of February 13-17, Lanza competed in the Canadian Tour qualifying event and placed 11th in the event. The top 20 players from the 2006 Winter Qualifying School earned full exempt status on this year's Canadian Tour. Lanza missed the cut in his first event before his 12th place finish at the Yes! Golf BCR Challenge.
Lanza will return to action on the Canadian Tour when he competes in the 2006 Northern California Classic at Brookside Country Club in Stockton, CA, March 20-26.
