Saint Mary's Vaults to Top of Leader Board After 36 Holes of West Coast Conference Men's Golf Championship

BREMERTON, Wash. – Saint Mary’s vaulted from seventh place after 18 holes to lead the field with 36 holes in the books at the 2014 West Coast Conference Men’s Golf Championship at the Gold Mountain Golf Club. Pacific’s Byron Meth maintains the individual lead at 7-under while competing on the par-72 Olympic Course playing at 7,007 yards.

After the opening round, all nine teams were within 11 strokes from top to bottom on the leader board. The competition was fierce once again on Tuesday. Entering Wednesday’s final round, just five shots separate the Gaels at 1-over 577 (292, 285) from Pepperdine (290, 292) and San Francisco (288, 294) in sixth place at 6-over 582. 

Brigham Young (285, 295) and Santa Clara (288, 292) are tied for second at 4-over 580, one shot in front of San Diego (291, 290) and Pacific (286, 295) in a share of fourth place at 5-over.  

Meth continues to enjoy an outstanding tournament for the Tigers at 7-under 137 (66, 71). The junior leads the field with 10 birdies along with Saint Mary’s Alex Bungert. Defending WCC Championship medalist Grant Forrest of San Diego jumped to second place on the leader board after firing a 4-under 68 to move to 5-under 139 (71, 68). Bungert sits in third place after carding Tuesday’s lowest round, a 5-under 67 to drop to 4-under 140 (73, 67). 

After the field converted a whopping eight eagles on the in the first 18 holes, three more were carded on Tuesday. With one round remaining 14 players sit at par or better. Bungert and San Francisco’s Cory McElyea each have converted a pair of eagles. 

Four players – Pacific’s Drew Bender (73, 69), Pepperdine’s Kevin DeHuff (70, 72), Santa Clara’s Scott Lowe (71, 71) and McElyea (68, 74) are log jammed in fourth place at 2-under 142. Four programs – Pacific, Pepperdine, Saint Mary’s San Diego – have two players in the top-10. 

Final round action of the 2014 WCC Women’s Golf Championship tees off Wednesday, April 16. The men will go off on No. 1 tee in 10-minute intervals starting at 8:00 a.m. on the Olympic Course.
