LOMPOC, CA - WCC men's and women's golf teams wrapped up the first day of action at the WCC Golf Championships at La Purisima Golf Course in Lompoc, CA on Monday. Saint Mary's holds a slim three stroke lead over Pepperdine and San Francisco in the men's championship, while the Waves have jumped out to a commanding lead in the women's championship.

A pair of freshmen led the Saint Mary's men's golf team in the first day of competition at the West Coast Conference golf championships. Robert McRae and Daniel Cone posted 36-hole scores of 146 (+2) to lead the Gaels to scores of 295 and 296 for a total of 592 (+16) from the par-72, 7,105 yard La Purisima Golf Course. Saint Mary's will head into Tueday's final round with a three-shot lead over Pepperdine and San Francisco (+19).

Loyola Marymount, last season's WCC champion, currently sits at fourth place with a two round total of 600 (+24), while San Diego is just one stroke behind the Lions at 601 (+25). Santa Clara is sixth (603; +27), Gonzaga is currently seventh (609; +33) and Portland is eighth (618; +42).

On the women's side, Pepperdine, behind the play of senior All-American Eileen Vargas and freshman Misun Cho, took a commanding 22-shot lead after 36 holes. Vargas carded a 1-over par score of 145 to take a two-shot lead over Cho, who opened with scores of 71-76 for a 147 total. The duo helped the Waves post scores of 298-303 for a 15-over par score of 601 and a 22-shot lead over second-place San Francisco (623). Santa Clara (638) is third followed by Portland (643) and Gonzaga (646).

WCC teams wrap up championship play on Tuesday with the men teeing off at 7:30 a.m. and the women getting started at 8:00 a.m.
