Los Angeles, CA (May 4, 2006) -- Loyola Marymount University freshman Brian Locke and LMU women's rowing were named the LMU/Enterprise Rent-A-Car Student-Athletes of the Month for April as they brought their respective programs conference titles for the first time in school history.
As for the freshman Locke, the month of April was quite busy. He won the 2006 West Coast Conference Championship individual title thanks to a record-setting 64 in the final round. It tied LMU's single round record, set the LMU WCC Championship single round record, tied the WCC single round record in a WCC tournament and set the course record. He became the first individual title holder in program history.
His score of 210 led the Lions to their first ever team championship. He was named WCC Player of the Year, WCC freshman of the Year, LMU Athlete of the Year and LMU Freshman of the Year. He also was first-team All-WCC.
The women's varsity 8 team was Instrumental in helping Lions win first ever WCC Championship. With the team down by three points heading into the final race, LMU varsity 8 needed a victory to capture the program's first ever championship. The Lions led from the start, winning the race by a boat length, capturing the championship and breaking Gonzaga's streak of nine straight championships.
The Lions concluded the month and championship weekend by finishing second at the WIRA Championships, defeating Gonzaga for the second time in three days. The team started the month with a 9th place finish in the Jessop Whittier Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic. The Jessop Whittier Cup features some of the top boats in the nation and is an invitation only race. The Lions defeated both UCSB and Long Beach State and finished 2nd in the Miller Cup, falling to #15 UCLA by six seconds.
Members of the varsity 8 boat were coxswain Jennifer Guess, stroke Liz Stewart, Carla Conway, Christina Duechle, Courtney Cox, Alli Mitrovich, Kristi Adams, Erin Ludwig and bow Jill Austin.
Each month during the academic calendar, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (S.A.A.C.) will chose a male and female Enterprise Rent - A - Car student-athlete of the month whose performance best represents the traditions of Loyola Marymount University. Other student-athletes nominated this month were Daniel Macias (baseball), men's varsity 8 (crew), Maja Sundac (women's tennis), Nicole Hughes (women's water polo), Hillaree Bennett (softball) and Laura Mickelson (women's track).
