Moraga, CA - For the fourth straight year, the Saint Mary's golf team will have a representative in the NCAA Championships. This season, junior Mike McRae was one of six individuals selected to participate in the 2007 Western Regional at the Arizona State University Karsten Golf Course on May 17-19.
Mike McRae finished the 2006-07 season with a 72.6 stroke average, while playing in all 11 events and all 33 rounds the Gaels participated in. He is currently ranked 182 in stroke average. McRae posted a top-20 finish in nine of 11 events this season, had five top-5 finishes and took home medalist honors at the USF Triumph at Pauma Valley in March.
At the USF Triumph, McRae shot rounds of 70-70-69, shooting 4-under and winning the tournament by two shots. He finished the tournament four under over the final four holes as he finished birdie, par, eagle, birdie to win by two shots. McRae shot a career-low tournament score of 206 (-10) at the Ogio-Pacific Coast Intercollegiate.
Out of 33 total rounds, McRae posted four rounds in the 60s, which included a career-low round of 67 in the final round of the Ogio-Pacific Coast Intercollegiate. He had 19 rounds of par or better.
With McRae's selection to the 2007 NCAA Championship, the Saint Mary's golf team will be represented in the last four NCAA Championships. Chadd Cocco was selected as an individual in 2006, the SMC golf team earned an at large berth into the 2005 NCAA Western Regional, and Joe Lanza was selected as an individual in 2004.
In order to advance out of the West Regional, McRae will have to post the second lowest individual score of a player not advancing with his team. The championship rounds will be played on May 30-2 and the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club, Gold Course in Williamsburg, Virginia.
