Three WCC men's golf teams competed on the first day of the NCAA Regionals on Thursday. San Diego finished the day with the best WCC team score, recording an opening round 288 and currently sit in seventh place at the NCAA West Regional at the Lake Merced Golf Course. Host San Francisco is just two spots behind the Toreros, tying for 9th place with a team score of 291. Pepperdine, competing in the South Central Regional, is currently tied for 8th place after a first round score of 302.
LMU senior Greg Moss, competing as an individual, opened the 2009 NCAA Men's Golf West Regional at Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City, Calif., with an even par 72, putting him a 17-way tie for 20th place.
Three WCC players are tied for 13th place at the West Regional. San Francisco's Kyle Prolo and Ji Hwan Park, and San Diego's Ian Coffman, each carded rounds of -1 under par 71 to headline the list of WCC players. Tying LMU's Moss in 20th place is Alex Ching and Blake Trimble of San Diego.
Redshirt freshman Josh Anderson and juniors Shane Mason and Carl Smith are all tied for 28th place after 3-over 75s to pace the Waves at the South Central Regional.
The top five teams from each region will advance to the NCAA Championships. The NCAA Championships will be held May 26-30 at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.
