The Loyola Marymount men's golf team will head into uncharted territory today.
For the first time in their history, the Lions qualified for the NCAA West Regional by winning their first West Coast Conference championship on April 18.
All it took for the program to stage its breakthrough season was the addition of a pair of former South Bay high school standouts, one last season and one this season.
Sophomore Jason D'Amore (Mira Costa) and freshman Brian Locke (St. Bernard) have led the Lions all season, with Locke capturing individual honors at the WCC meet while D'Amore and sophomore Josh Escobedo tied for fourth.
"We were thinking that something like this would happen in the fifth or sixth year, so we're a little ahead of schedule, which is great," said Coach Alex Galvan, an LMU alumnus who returned to take over the program in 2002. "It shows you how dedicated these young fellows are."
