VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Gonzaga University senior Jimmy Hayes advanced to the round of 32 at the 105th PNGA Men's Amateur Championship, being played at the par-70, 6960-yard Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club.
Hayes, of Redmond, Wash., defeated Jacob Koppenberg of Everett, Wash., and a member of the University of Idaho golf team 2 up in Wednesday's opening round of match play.
Hayes, who tied for fourth in stroke play to advance to the match-play field of 64, will meet Erik Hanson of Kirkland, Wash., on Thursday morning. If he advances he will play Thursday afternoon against the winner of the Matt Ristine (Federal Way, Wash.) and Peter Ahn (Vancouver, B.C.) match for a spot in Friday's quarterfinals.
Stroke play medalist and number one seed, Adam Hadwin from Abbotsford, B.C., and number two seed, Rafael Lee from Burnaby B.C both won their first matches Wednesday.
Matches continue on Thursday with the round of 32 starting at 7:30 a.m. from the first tee. Winners will advance to the afternoon round of 16 starting from the first tee at 12:30 p.m.
