Cheney Wins Tri-City Amateur Title

July 23, 2007

KENNEWICK, Wash. - Derek Cheney, a Gonzaga University sophomore-to-be, held onto the Division 1 lead to capture his inaugural Tri-City Amateur Championship Sunday.

Cheney shot above par on the front nine and survived a double-bogey on No. 12 at Canyon Lakes Golf Course in Sunday's final round. But he birdied No. 13 and finished the round with a 2-over par 74 and a two-shot victory at 208.

A native of Richland, Wash., he capped the victory with a par on the final hole to hold off Dan Whitaker of Cle Elum.

"Growing up, you always hear about the Tri-City Am and I've always wanted to play in it," Cheney said. "My dad played in it for a few years, so I knew this was something I wanted to do. This is definitely my best win so far."

Cheney played in three spring tournaments as a freshman for the Bulldogs, his best finish a 14th at the North-South Intercollegiate in Jacksonville, Fla.
