Moraga, CA - Saint Mary's College Director of Athletics and Recreational Sports Mark Orr announced that men's head coach Scott Hardy will return to lead the Gaels' golf team. Hardy, who agreed to a contract extension with SMC, is coming off his fourth West Coast Conference Coach of the Year award. Terms of the agreement are not disclosed.
"Scott has done an outstanding job building the men's golf program over the past seven years," said Mark Orr. "He is very deserving of the extension to his time at Saint Mary's, and I look forward to the men's golf program's continued success under Scott."
In his seven years at Saint Mary's, Hardy has been named the West Coast conference Coach of the year four time, including three of the last four years. He led Saint Mary's to its first NCAA Tournament appearance as a team in 2005 and has had at least one member of his team make the NCAA Tournament field as an individual in each of the past four years.
Two players from the 2005 NCAA Tournament team, Joe Lanza and Liam Kendregan, are currently playing professionally on the Canadian Tour. Under Hardy, the Gaels have had six players win medalist honors, while the team has won eight tournaments, including the Del Walker Intercollegiate and the USF Triumph at Pauma Valley during the 2006-07 season.
Against the West Coast Conference, Hardy led the Gaels to a fourth place finish, or better, the past six years, including second place finishes in 2004 and 2005. The runner-up finishes in the conference championships mark the best result by the Saint Mary's golf team in the 37-year history of the WCC Championship.
In addition to the recent team success, Hardy has had seven players earn First Team All-West Coast Conference honors, which include former golfers John Chirila, Joe Lanza, and Liam Kendregan, and current golfers Chadd Cocco, Mikej McRae, and Robert McRae. Lanza was the WCC Player of the Year in 2005 and Cocco garnered WCC Freshman of the Year recognition in 2004.
Hardy and the Saint Mary's golf team will open their 2007-08 season with the Saint Mary's Invitational on Sept. 9-10. The SMC hosted event will be played at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach, CA and will feature a field on 19 teams and 95 players.
