USD Golfers Open Season at Gopher Invitational

(Minneapolis, MN) - The USD men's golf team, under the direction of fifth-year head coach Tim Mickelson, will open up their 2007-08 campaign by competing in The Gopher Invitational in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The tournament will consists of 54 holes, 36 of which will be played on Saturday (Sept. 15), followed by 18 holes on Sunday (Sept. 16). The tournament, hosted by the University of Minnesota, will take place at Spring Hill Golf Club (par 72; 7,020 yards). Besides USD and Minnesota, other teams competing include Arkansas, Georgia Southern, Illinois, Indiana, Lamar, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Princeton, SMU and Wisconsin. Toreros on the trip include seniors Bucky Coe and Joe Panzeri, junior Darren Hall, junior transfer Blake Trimble, and freshman Jason Shano. Live scoring will be available on golfstat.com throughout the tournament.

Hall, a redshirt junior from Golden, Colorado, advanced to the 2007 NCAA Individual Championships. He averaged a team best 72.31 last season for 36 rounds. Bucky Coe, from nearby Encinitas (La Costa Canyon HS), averaged 73.44 for 27 rounds. Panzeri, a second year performer who transferred to USD last year from the Univ. of Washington, averaged 74.30 for 33 rounds. Blake Trimble, a junior from nearby Rancho Santa Fe (Torrey Pines HS), played his first two years of collegiate golf for UNLV. Shano is a first year freshman from Scottsdale, Arizona and Chaparral HS.
