MEN'S GOLF TRAVELS TO OHIO FOR XAVIER INVITATIONAL

THIS WEEK IN MEN'S GOLF
The Saint Mary's golf team will compete in its second tournament of the year, when the Gaels travel to Ohio to participate in the Xavier Fall Invitational. The tournament will have a 20-team field and will be played at The Oasis Golf Club in Loveland, OH. The Oasis GC is a 36-hole facility that features two Arnold Palmer designs. The tournament will be played on the Palmer Course, which is a par-71, 6,633-yard layout. The rating for the course is 71.7 and the slope of 133.

TOURNAMENT FORMAT
The 54-hole medal play tournament will be played over two days with an overall team and an individual champion awarded. Teams will play 36 holes on Monday and the final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday. Play will begin at 8:30 am (CST) on Monday with a shotgun start. Tuesday's rounds will begin at 8 am with tee times starting on both the 1st and 10th holes.

XAVIER INVITATIONAL FIELD
The tournament will have a field of 20 schools and will feature 110 players. Each team will have five players and there will be 10 individuals competing in the tournament. The tournament includes teams from 10 different conferences including the West Coast Conference (Saint Mary's and San Francisco) the Metro Atlantic (Akron, Ball State, Eastern Michigan, and Ohio), the Ohio Valley Conference (Austin Peay and Eastern Kentucky), the Atlantic Sun (Campbell), the Big East (Cincinnati and Marquette), the Southern Conference (Davidson and Western Carolina), the Atlantic 10 (George Washington and Xavier), Conference USA (Marshall), the Sun Belt (New Orleans), and the Horzion League (Wright State).

SMC'S LAST APPEARANCE AT XAVIER INVITE
The last time the Gaels competed in the Xavier Invitational, SMC posted a second place overall finish, shooting a team score of 9-under par. Chadd Cocco, Mike McRae and Josh Kelley all competed in the event as freshmen. McRae and Kelley shot 54-hole scores of even-par 216, while Cocco shot 222 (+6).

LAST TIME AROUND THE LINKS
In their last tournament, the Saint Mary's golf team posted a third place finish at the Saint Mary's Invitational at Poppy Hills Golf Course. Saint Mary's opened the tournament with an opening round of 302 (+14) and 14 shots off the pace of Baylor University. The Gaels responded with an afternoon round of 291 (+3) and closed the gap between the leaders by two shots. In the final round, SMC used a 3-under par score by Chadd Cocco, en route to a team score of 290 (+2), when moved the Gaels from eighth place to third place overall. The round of 290 on Tuesday was the lowest over the day in tough conditions.

COCCO MAKES IMPACT IN FIRST EVENT
After taking the 2006-07 season off, senior Chadd Cocco made a big impact in the Gael's first tournament of the season. Cocco posted rounds of 74-73-69 to shoot even par at the Saint Mary's Invitational to finish third overall in the individual tournament. His 3-under 69 in the final round was the low for the day, and helped SMC just from eighth to third overall in the team tournament.

THE NEXT EVENT
Following the Xavier Fall Invitational, SMC will get right back to action the following week in the Alister Mackenzie Invitational. The tournament, hosted by California, will be played at the Meadow Club in Fairfax, CA. The tournament will be a 54-hole event that will be played on Monday and Tuesday, October 8-9.
