Men's Golf To Compete at Alister Mackenzie Invite On Monday

This Week In Men's Golf
The Saint Mary's golf team will compete in its third tournament of the year, when the Gaels travel to Fairfax, CA to participate in the Alister Mackenzie Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, October 8-9. The Alister Mackenzie Invite will have a 16-team field and will be played at the Meadow Club.

About the Course
The Meadow Club is an 18-hole championship golf course created by the legendary golf designer Alister Mackenzie in 1927. The Meadow Club is a par-71, 6,686-yard layout. The rating for the course is 72.6 with a slope of 135 from the back tees.

Tournament Format
The 54-hole medal play tournament will be played over two days with an overall team and an individual champion awarded. Teams will play 36 holes on Monday and the final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday. Play will begin at 8:30 am (CST) on Monday with a shotgun start. Tuesday's rounds will begin at 8 am with tee times starting on both the 1st and 10th holes.

Alister Mackenzie Invite Field
The tournament will have a field of 16 schools and will feature 80 players, with five players from each team. The tournament includes teams from six different conferences, with six teams from the Pacific-10 Conference (Arizona State, tournament host California, Oregon, Oregon State, Washington and Washington State). The West Coast Conference will have three representatives (Saint Mary's, Santa Clara, and San Francisco) and the Big West will also have three teams competing (Cal Poly, UC Davis, and UC Irvine). The Western Athletic Conference will have two teams in the field (Fresno State and San Jose State), and the Big East (Louisville) and the Mountain West (San Diego State) will have one team in the field.

Last Time Around The Links
In their last tournament, the Saint Mary's golf team posted a fourth place finish at the Xavier Fall Invitational. Saint Mary's opened the tournament with a round of 283 (-5) and posted a second round score of 8-under par 280 for a second place result after 36 holes. The Gaels trailed Marquette after the first day, as the Golden Eagles shot 22-under par (266) as a team in the second round. In the final round, SMC shot 7-under par and finished the tournament with a 54-hole score of 20-under, which was three shots off the pace of Marquette. SMC finished fourth overall. Three Gaels finished in the top-20, with Josh Kelley finishing tied for third, Daniel Cone finished tied for 14th, and Robert McRae finished tied for 20th.

Kelley Shots School Record at Xavier
In the Xavier Invitational, senior Josh Kelley posted a school record for a 54-hole tournament. Kelley shot 205 (-11), which is one shot better than the previous record held by Mike McRae and Chadd Cocco. Kelley opened the tournament with a 66 and then 68 to hold the individual lead of -10 heading into the final round. Kelley closed the tournament with a 1-under par 71 and finished tied for third overall.

The Next Event
Following the Alister Mackenzie Invitational, Saint Mary's will have two weeks off before its next competition. Saint Mary's will return to action on Thursday and Friday, October 25-26 in the Del Walker Intercollegiate hosted by Long Beach State. The Del Walker Intercollegiate will be played at the Virginia Country Club in Long Beach, California.
