SAN DIEGO, Calif - The University of San Diego men's soccer team (2-0-0) finished this weekends opening homestand with their second shutout in a row as they defeated the University at Albany Great Danes (0-2-0) 4-0 Sunday afternoon at Torero Stadium.
Of the 22 players that saw action for San Diego, 12 different athletes took shots on the Great Danes goalkeeper. USD tallied a total of 26 shots, 14 of which were shots on goal.
San Diego's first goal came in the 4th minute, and for the second match in a row, it was an own goal. A Great Danes defender passed back towards the goalkeeper which went wide and rolled into the net for a 1-0 lead.
Control over the match went back and forth for the remainder of the first half, however the period ended at 1-0 in favor of the Toreros.
In the 69th minute, senior midfield Eric Pohl dribbled the ball to the top of the penalty box passing to freshman midfield Ciaran O'Brien waiting on the right side of the penalty box. O'Brien lofted a pass into the center to senior forward Ryan Guy at the top of the goalie box. Guy fired off a shot to the left side of the net for a 2-0 lead and his first goal of the season. Credit an assist to Pohl and O'Brien.
In the 83rd minute, Pohl was on the right side of the penalty box taking a free kick from a foul on the Great Danes. Pohl centered a high shot to the far side of the net to freshman midfield Mike Barbeito who put a header past the Albany goalkeeper to score his first career goal as a Torero and lift San Diego to a 3-0 lead.
The final goal came less than a minute later in the 84th minute as junior midfield Tannen Wels found open space in the penalty box dribbling past a defender and taking a shot from 18 yards out scoring his first goal of the season sealing a 4-0 victory.
For the Great Danes defender Brian Gordon recorded one shot against San Diego as well as forward Gaby Seguin-Gauthier took one shot. Forward Yan Gbolo recorded one shot on goal. Starting goalkeeper Steward Ceus played 82 minutes and recorded two goals against and nine saves. Goalkeeper Alex Kuritzky came in for eight minutes and recorded two goals against and one save. The Danes took a total of three shots, recorded 10 saves, and had 11 fouls.
For the Toreros, Wels recorded one goal and two shots. Guy tallied one goal and three shots. O'Brien posted one assist and two shots. Pohl finished with two assists and three shots. Barbeito recorded one goal and one shot. Senior goalkeeper Lance Friesz played 78 minutes and recorded one save. Sophomore goalkeeper Kelin Briones saw 12 minutes of playing time and recorded no stats. The Toreros as a team took nine corner kicks and finished with 11 fouls.
The University of San Diego travel back to the East Coast for their first road trip. They will face the Bears of Brown University on Friday, September 1 at 4:30 p.m. (PST) followed by the Providence College Friars on Sunday, September 3 at 8:30 a.m. (PST).
