Fairborn, OH- Saint Mary's sophomore forward Carlos Diaz tallied his second goal in as many games, this one being a game winner that handed Saint Mary's a 2-1 victory over Wright State Sunday afternoon from Alumni Field. The win marks the first of the season for the Gaels and a career first for first-year head coach Adam Cooper.

With the score tied at one, Diaz again found the back of the net for the second time in two games. The crafty striker beat Wright State goalkeeper Tebias Mason on a one-on-one shot near post in the 68th minute to give SMC the lead for good.

Down one after the half, senior midfielder Matthew Fitzgerald netted the equalizer in the 59th minute. Fitzgerald eluded the Raider defense and beat Mason on a one-on-one breakaway.

Wright State broke the silence and got on the board first when Braden Fleak connected on a one-touch finish from five yards out. Jonah Baskin and Kwaku Gyimah set up the play.

The Gaels were effective on their shots as they tallied two goals on only six shots. Fitzgerald led the way for SMC with two shots. The Raiders racked off 14 and were led by Tony Labudovski's four shots.

SMC goalkeeper Brian Mason allowed one goal and made five saves for the second consecutive game. WSU's Mason allowed two goals and tallied two saves.

The Gaels finished second in the Wright State adidas cup, tallying a 1-0-1 record. Butler took home the cup title on goal differential.

Diaz, Fitzgerald and junior midfielder Jason Stanwood were named to the all-tournament team.

Saint Mary's will return to action on Thursday, August 31 when the Gaels continue on the road to face San Jose State. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Spartan Stadium.
