PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The University of San Diego Toreros men's soccer team (2-1-0) posted their first loss of the season as the Brown University Bears (1-0-0) defeated the Toreros 2-1.
The first goal of the match came in the 20th minute as the Bears had possession deep in Torero territory. Sophomore defender Rhett Bernstein put a header from five yards out past senior goalkeeper Lance Friesz as the bears took a 1-0 lead. Credit the assist to senior midfield Ian Premo.
The Toreros responded when in the 38th minute senior midfield Eric Pohl setup for a corner kick on the left side of the net. Pohl sent a ball sailing to senior forward Michael Caso who headed the ball past the goalie tying the match 1-1 going into halftime.
Both teams returned for the second half however it was Brown who took control of the match when in the 66th minute junior forward Kevin Davies had a break away ball charging the net. Friesz responded with a defensive attack leaving the net and blocking Davies first shot attempt. The ball rebounded directly back to Davies with Friesz on the ground, leaving Davies with an open net to score sealing their 2-1 victory.
For the Bears Bernstein finished with two shots and one goal. Davies finished with two shots and one goal. Premo finished with on assist. Andrew Daniels finished with a team high three shots on goal.
For San Diego, senior midfield Eric Pohl recorded an assist for the second game in a row and recording three shots. Senior forward Michael Caso took a team high five shots scoring the loan goal for the Toreros. Senior forward Ryan Guy also recorded three shots on goal. As a team, the Toreros out-shot the Bears 16-12.
San Diego continues their East Coast road trip with a match against the Providence College Friars on Sunday, September 3 at 8:30 a.m. PST.
