IRVINE, Calif. -UC Irvine scored the lone goal of the match at 85:49 as the Anteaters defeated Gonzaga University 1-0 Friday in the men's soccer opener for both teams.
The Anteaters broke the scoreless tie in the 86th minute as freshman Adrian Burgess crossed the ball into the box where freshman Spencer Thompson tapped the ball over to freshman Amani Walker who put the ball past Bulldog keeper Vito Higgins at the 85:49 mark. Walker had checked back into the match less than a minute before scoring the game-winning goal.
Freshman keeper Pat Barton had four saves for the Anteaters - all in the first half - as he earned the shutout in his first career match. Higgins had three saves for Gonzaga.
Gonzaga was outshot 15-6 in the match and the Bulldogs had just one second-half shot.
The loss was the fourth straight by the Bulldogs in the series the Anteaters now lead 6-2-0, and was the third straight 1-0 win for UCI over Gonzaga. The Bulldogs have lost all six matches in the series at UC Irvine. Friday's match was the first meeting between the teams since 2001.
The early season doesn't get much easier for the Bulldogs, who face defending College Cup champion UC Santa Barbara on the road Sunday at 2 p.m. The Gauchos opened the season Friday with a 2-2 tie at Stanford University.
