Men's Soccer Battles UMBC to 2-2 Tie

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - - The Gonzaga University men's soccer team battled the University of Maryland Baltimore-County to a 2-2 tie Saturday as part of the Anders Navy Classic in Annapolis, Md. The match had been originally scheduled for Friday but was postponed due to heavy rains.

With the win, Gonzaga moves to 1-1-1 for the season.

Gonzaga got on the board at the 34:26 mark when Chris Hoyd sailed the ball into the net from 10 yards out after it had been deflected following a corner kick by Ben Funkhouser.

UMBC (1-1-1 overall) responded eight minutes later to knot the match at 1-1. Kevin Mezzadra scored the goal with a header from five yards out after connecting with a pass from Bryan Moffa.

The Bulldogs regained the lead in the 64th minute, George Josten dribbled through the Retriever defense near the middle of the pitch before, getting it past the goalie, Steve King, from 10 yards out.

The Retrievers tied the game for good at 82:32 when Mezzadra scored his second goal of the afternoon from 10 yards out.

Gonzaga maintained a large advantage on shots through out the game. Overall, GU held the 23-9 advantage, including an 11-3 advantage in the second half. GU also held a 12-5 advantage on corner kicks.

The Zags will return to the pitch Sunday when they face host Navy in the final game of the Anders Navy Classic. The match time is scheduled for 9 a.m. PST.
