Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 decision to Cal Poly Saturday afternoon from Garaventa Field. It took one and a half overtimes to sort things out but in the end the Gaels fell just short. After the loss, SMC falls to 1-2-1 on the season while Cal Poly improves to 1-1-1.
With a little more than five minutes remaining in the second and final overtime, the Mustangs were able to find the back of the net and spoil SMC's home opener. Jose Garcia found room on the right side of the box and then combined with Julian Alvarez for a quick one-two combination that Garcia was able to bury far post.
For the second consecutive game the Gaels out-shot their opponent this time 9-8. SMC held Cal Poly to only one shot in the opening half but then both teams rallied off six in the second frame.
Eric Branagan-Franco recorded the victory for Cal Poly on the strength of his second shutout on the year. Brian Mason was tagged with the loss after tallying four saves and allowing one goal in 104 minutes.
Saint Mary's will return to action when it hosts the Saint Mary's Classic. SMC will open its tournament play against Bowling Green on Friday, September 8 at 4 p.m. from Garaventa Field.
