LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The #14 LMU men's soccer team thoroughly dominated Marquette for a 2-1 win in non-conference action this afternoon at Sullivan Field. The Lions did not allow a shot in the first half, and outshot the Golden Eagles 18-2 for the game. Defender Bobby Burling gave the Lions a quick lead in the seventh minute, and Brad Stisser put in the game-winner in the 75th minute. LMU improves to 2-1 on the season while Marquette drops its first game of the season and falls to 1-1-1.
LMU controlled the game from the start, taking a quick 1-0 lead at 6:10. Junior Adam Sloustcher fed the ball to Michael Ogletree on the outside in front of the Marquette bench. The right side defender launched a perfect ball to central defender Burling who was waiting inside the 18 yard box. The senior settled the ball with his leg before calmly slotting it past a charging Matt Pyzdrowski to put LMU ahead.
The Lions did not allow a single shot in the first half and took eight shots. The Golden Eagles came out of the halftime break more aggressive and were able to tie the game in the 56th minute. Dan Addis took the ball into the Lion defense and launched a low, hard shot from the top of the box to the far right corner. LMU goalkeeper Miguel Benitez dove for the ball, but could not stop it and the game was tied.
LMU had several close calls in the second half, but couldn't convert until the 75th minute. Sophomore Alex Proano crossed a ball from the right side to David Niemeyer in the middle. The senior flicked the ball to the left side to Stisser who eluded the Marquette goalkeeper and launched a low hard shot to the far post to give the Lions a lead. That would be all they needed as Marquette managed just one more shot in the game.
For the second half, LMU outshot Marquette 10-2. Niemeyer led all players with four shots, while Stisser added three. Benitez did not make a save in his first action of the season, and Pyzdrowski made one save for Marquette.
LMU returns to action next weekend when they travel to the New England area for the second time in three weeks to participate in the Harvard Tournament. LMU will take on Rhode Island and the host Crimson.
