USF Men's Soccer Defeats Alabama A&M 3-2 in Overtime

Sept. 2, 2007

(San Francisco) - USF got a pair of goals from freshman forward Jeff Penna, including the game-winner at the 100:29 mark in the first overtime period, downing Alabama A&M 3-2 Sunday afternoon at Negoesco Stadium. The Dons (1-1-0) collect their inaugural win of the season at the expense of the Bulldogs (0-2-0) who dropped a 3-2 contest at No. 5 Santa Clara Friday night.

Rebounding after a shutout loss in the 2007 season opener against Vermont, San Francisco's offense clicked. The Dons held a 18-15 shot advantage, including a 10-5 edge after halftime, and a 10-2 lead in corner kicks.

Freshman forward Conor Chinn got USF on the scoreboard first at the 33:11 mark off assists from senior forward Brandon McDonald and freshman forward Rafai Eddy. Chinn collided with Bulldogs keeper Paul Musoke, but recovered to send the ball to the back of the net for the fifth time in his career.

Alabama A&M countered on a controversial tally less than three minutes later at 35:24 by MfanaFuthi Bhembe, who appeared to be offside.

Penna gave USF the advantage once again at 59:49 taking a cross from the right flank from senior midfielder Daniel DeGeer and sent it left past a diving Musoke for the 2-1 edge.

Mosito Ranko countered with a perfectly placed scoring strike to the upper corner to deadlock the contest at 2-2 at 82:43.

Once in overtime, the Bulldogs shot first, but the Dons scored last as Chinn set up Penna for the game-winner.

"I think we are very fortunate to win this game," USF head coach Erik Visser said. "We have a long way to go if we want to compete with the elite teams coming up on our schedule."

Senior goalkeeper Jeremy Coupe (1-0-0) recorded his first victory in the Green and Gold after transferring from Cal Poly, posting seven saves. Musoke (0-2-0) suffered the loss and recorded six saves.

USF returns to action when it hosts ancient Bay Area rival San Jose State Sunday, September 9. Kick-off against the Spartans is set for 7:00 PM at Negoesco Stadium.
