No. 5 Santa Clara Beats Heat And Takes Down Vermont 2-0

Sept. 2, 2007

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - On a hot Sunday afternoon at Buck Shaw Stadium, the No. 5 Santa Clara Broncos got out to an early lead and cruised to a 2-0 victory over the Vermont Catamounts. With game-time temperatures reaching 94 degrees, senior captain Peter Lowry and Jide Ogunbiyi scored early first-half goals to give SCU its second straight win to open the season. Junior Joseph Buttitta made two saves to record his first shutout of the season.

Lowry got the Broncos started in the 12th minute with a perfectly placed header at the back post. Ogunbiyi, making his first start of the year, set the play up after receiving a pass in the box. He held off his defender and sent a pass out wide to redshirt freshman Kellen Wantulok. Wantulok drove a perfectly weighted ball to the far post for Lowry, who calmly lofted a header over Vermont goalkeeper Tom Critz. The goal was the 15th of Lowry's career, putting him within five goals of the program's Top 10 goalscorers.

Nine minutes later, Ogunbiyi scored on a very similar play with Wantulok again serving as the catalyst. Freshman Jalil Anibaba sent a diagonal ball to the left wing for Wantulok, who drove another great ball into the heart of the penalty box. Ogunbiyi out-leaped his defender and nodded the ball past Critz into the back of the net.

Senior Jamil Roberts kept the Broncos advantage at two goals with a spectacular goal-line save in 13 minutes into the second half. Vermont's Jordan Crasilneck got behind the defense and had only Bronco goalkeeper Joseph Buttitta to beat. He fired a low shot that deflected off Buttitta and was headed for the far corner. Roberts recovered quickly and slid at the last second to knock the ball off the line and out for a throw in.

With the heat slowing the game down in the latter stages of the match, neither team could produce many more clear-cut scoring opportunities. The Broncos used their possession game to keep Vermont at bay until the final whistle.

Santa Clara heads to the East Coast for its next two matches, as the Broncos face Brown and Boston University in the Brown adidas Classic on Sept. 7 and 9 in Providence, R.I.
