PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The No. 3 Santa Clara men's soccer team did not get their East Coast road trip off to a good start, falling 2-1 to Brown University Friday night in the Brown adidas Classic. Junior Jide Ogunbiyi scored for the second straight game for the Broncos, but two second-half goals by Brown proved to be the difference.
Santa Clara grabbed the lead thanks to a strong effort from junior Brian Martin on the right wing. After battling through some tough tackles, he got himself free and served a ball into the box. Ogunbiyi got to the spot and drove a header past Brown goalkeeper Paul Grandstrand to put SCU up 1-0.
Goalkeeper Joseph Buttitta and the Broncos were able to shut down the Bears for the rest of the first half and held that 1-0 lead at the break.
However, the game changed early in the second half, as Brown burst out of the locker room with two goals to move into the lead. Brown's David Walls set up Dylan Sheehan for an easy finish in the 50th minute to tie the game at one goal apiece. Sheehan headed a shot past Buttitta to get the home crowd fired up.
Sheehan then played the role of provider less than four minutes later to put Brown ahead. Sheehan fed Kevin Davies, who unleashed a long-range effort that got past Buttitta.
Despite heavy pressure late in the match, none of the Broncos 12 second half shots found the back of the net. Martin had a strong half as he constantly made driving runs from his spot on the right wing but the Bears defense kept SCU off the board.
Santa Clara completes play at the Brown adidas Classic on Sunday, Sept. 9 with a match against Boston University at 9 a.m. PT. The match will be the first meeting ever between the two schools.
