SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego Men's soccer team (1-1-0) captured their first win of the season over the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights (1-2-0) Friday evening at Torero Stadium by a score of 2-0.
USD's first goal of the match came in the 24th minute when Tannen Wels wound up for a shot to have it blocked by a defender. The Knights attempted to clear the ball from the goalie box losing possession to JT Howlan with open net with just him and the goalie. Howlan fired off the shot from 15 yards in front of the net to take a 1-0 lead.
In the 60th minute, USD freshman Brandon Kelley dished a ball off to Dustin Guerrero who fired off a shot but was blocked by a defender in the goalie box. The loose ball was picked up by Tannen Wels who from 19 yards out shot left passed the diving goalie and into the lower left corner of the net to increase their lead 2-0.
Howlan took one shot on goal and had one goal on the night while Wels had a shot on goal, a goal, and an assist. USD out-shot the Knights by a 12-3 margin.
The Toreros return to Walter J. Zable Field at Torero Stadium on Sunday, September 9 to take on the New Jersey Institute Highlanders at 2:00 p.m.
