PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Santa Clara men's soccer team bounced back from a loss on Friday night with a convincing 3-0 win over the Boston University Terriers at the Brown adidas Classic. Junior Jide Ogunbiyi scored for the third straight game to put Santa Clara up 1-0 and the Broncos also got goals from senior Matt Hatzke and freshman David Castellanos. No. 3 SCU improves to 3-1-0 with the win.
The Broncos, looking to erase the memory of Friday's loss, stormed out of the gate and kept the Terriers pinned in their end right from the start. Santa Clara's hard work paid off early with Ogunbiyi's third strike of the season. Senior Jamil Roberts fired a hard shot that was blocked by the Terrier defense, but the deflection fell right to Ogunbiyi, who finished the play off for a 1-0 Bronco lead. The goal came just three minutes into the match.
With a one goal advantage, SCU continued to go on the attack throughout the first half, peppering the Terrier's goal with 13 shots. Unfortunately, none of them were able to find the back of the net and the Broncos entered halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Eighteen minutes into the second half, the lead grew to two goals as Hatzke scored his first of the year. After a foul outside the box, Hatzke stepped up and curled a free kick into the upper corner past Terrier goalkeeper Hrafn Davidsson.
Castellanos put the game out of reach with his first career goal in the 80th minute. Roberts again got the play started as he fired a shot at the net. The ball came back to Castellanos, who buried it in the net to clinch the victory for the Broncos. The assist was Roberts' fourth of the season, a career high.
Three Bronco players were named to the all-tournament team, senior Peter Lowry, Ogunbiyi and Roberts.
Santa Clara returns to the Bay Area next weekend for two matches against local rivals. On Friday, Sept. 14, the Broncos host the Stanford Cardinal at 7:30 p.m. PT at Buck Shaw Stadium. Two days later, SCU travels to Berkeley to play the Cal Bears at 1:00 p.m. PT. Follow all the action right here at SantaClaraBroncos.com.
