SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's soccer team (2-1-0) defeated the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders (1-2-0) making them the outright winners of the 2007 Adidas Classic, which included San Diego State and Fairleigh Dickinson. Freshman forward Kyle Ochoa scored the game winning goal in the 14th minute.
Early in the first half, senior forward Dustin Guerrero dribbled the ball up the right sideline with a Highlander defender near by. Guerrero sent a pass into the goalie box where Ochoa took it off one bounce and fired off a shot past the goal keeper for the 1-0 lead.
Three and a half minutes into the second half, sophomore Fabrice Gautrat lined up a free kick from a Highlander foul. 25 yards out off the right side off the right side of the goal, Gautrat sent a ball sailing through the air and into the goal lifting the Toreros to a 2-0 victory.
Ochoa had two shots on goal and one goal. Guerrero had two shots on goal and one assist. Gautrat had one shot on goal and one goal. Goal keeper Kelin Briones had 2 saves on the day. The Toreros out-shot the Highlanders 17-3.
USD returns to action for their first road trip when they fly to the east coast on Friday, September 14 to take on Hofstra followed by Long Island University on Sunday September 16.
