SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's soccer team (3-1-0) posted a 3-1 victory, their third straight win at home, against the UC Riverside Highlanders (3-4-0) Tuesday evening at Torero Stadium.
After a scoreless first period, the fireworks erupted early in the second period when in the 50th minute, junior midfield Dustin Guererro crossed to junior forward Nick Leonard at the top of the penalty box. Riverside goalkeeper Charles Alamo dove to deflect Leonard's shot but missed as the ball flew past him and into the net for a 1-0 lead.
In the 81st minute, Guerrero again recorded an assist as he crossed a ball into the box from the left side to junior midfield Tannen Wels who took the shot from inside the penalty box past Alamo for a 2-0 lead.
San Diego marched back down the field less than a minute later when junior forward Adam Mariani passed a ball from centerfield to freshman Ciaran O'Brien who was streaking up the near side of the field past the Riverside defense. Alamo charged leaving an open net when O'Brien lofted a shot over the goalkeepers head and into the back corner of the goal for a 3-0 lead.
San Diego was unable to hold their shut out streak when in the 85th minute Riverside's Steven Kaufman booted a corner kick into the goalie box. Highlander Ben Oliver managed to sneak the ball in past senior goalkeeper Lance Friesz cutting the deficit to 3-1. However, San Diego managed to hang on for the remaining five minutes of the match to capture the victory.
For Riverside, Oliver recorded one shot on goal and one goal. Other Highlanders recording shots included Joel Crompton, Erasmo Solorzano, Nathan Peterson and Xavier Plummer. Riverside recorded six total shots and three corner kicks. Alamo finished with three goals against and two saves in the match.
For San Diego, Wels recorded a team high three shots and one goal. O'Brien had two shots and one goal. Nick Leonard recorded one shot and one goal. Guerrero tallies two assists. Mariani is credited with one assist in the match. Friesz finished with one goal against in the match. As a team, San Diego recorded 14 shots and two corner kicks.
San Diego returns to action for more preseason action this upcoming weekend as they will host Long Island University on Friday, September 15 at 7:30 p.m., followed by Rider University on Sunday, September 17 at 2:30 p.m. from Torero Stadium.
