San Diego Records Third Shutout Against Long Island University

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's soccer team (4-1-0) posted their third shut out this season and continue to dominate opponents at home as they defeated the Long Island University Blackbirds (2-5-0) 3-0 to remain undefeated when playing at Torero Stadium.

San Diego struck quickly jumping out to a 1-0 lead early in the first half. In the seventh minute, midfielder Dustin Guerrero passed to midfielder Ciaran O'Brien on the nearside who charged into the box with the ball. O'Brien chipped a shot over a defender and into the center of the penalty box 10 yards from the net where forward Ryan Guy punched in a header past the goalkeeper. Credit O'Brien and Guerrero with an assist.

In the 26th minute Guerrero got a hold of a loose ball at the top of the penalty box where he booted it up to himself and followed up with a header which soared over the goalkeepers reach and into the net for a 2-0 lead.

In the 41st minute, midfielder Colin Jennings lined up for a foul shot from 50 yards out. His kick sailed into the penalty box which was received by midfielder Kevin Meissner who tapped it in the commotion to forward Adam Mariani who was five yards from the net. Mariani punched the ball past Blackbird goalkeeper Alex Fatovic to seal the 3-0 victory.

For Long Island, the Blackbirds took three shots, two of which came from midfielder Szymon Hryszczyk and one shot from forward Ryan Vanderkin. Fatovic finishes with three goals against and recorded six saves against the Torero offense.

For San Diego, Ryan Guy took a team high four shots, followed by Michael Caso with three shots. O'Brien, Tannen Wels, Guerrero, and Mariani all recorded two shots each for the Toreros. Jennings recorded his first career goal as a Torero tonight. While Mariani and Guerrero add to their career stats with each of their goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Kelin Briones made his debut as a starter in goal for San Diego allowing no goals and recording one save for his first complete match.

The Toreros continue their homestand with a match against the Rider University Broncs on Sunday, September 17 at 2:30 p.m. from Torero Stadium.
