LMU Falls to #16 Creighton 1-0 in Overtime

Sept. 15, 2007

St. Louis, MO - LMU went up against its third ranked opponent in four games but suffered its third consecutive 1-0 defeat as #16 Creighton scored two minutes into the first overtime period Sunday in the teams' finale at the Saint Louis/Nike Soccer Classic in St. Louis, MO.

Two days after duelling with #24 Saint Louis but falling on a last-minute goal in regulation, the Lions (1-4-0) again went toe-to-toe with a ranked opponent for 90 minutes. Unfortunately, the result was the same as Byron Dacy netted the game-winner 1:59 into overtime for the Bluejays (3-0-2). Dacy started the play after an LMU foul, playing a short ball to Jeff Thayer out wide. Thayer served the ball into the box, where Tim Walters settled it and found Dacy, who side-volleyed into the back of the net to end the game.

CU came close early when Andrei Gotsmanov hit the crossbar in the 18th minute. The Lions came roaring back, forcing Bluejay goalkeeper Matt Allen into a pair of saves in the opening 45 minutes. At the other end, redshirt freshman Patrick Lane was brilliant in goal for the Lions, stopping four shots before halftime.

The Bluejays pushed forward in the second half, outshooting LMU 11-6, but the strong Lion defense held, with Lane making four more saves en route to six for the game. CU held an 18-11 shot advantage overall and Allen also had six saves.

Junior Brad Stisser took five of LMU's 11 shots, putting three on goal.

LMU returns home next week from its four-game road trip for the LMU/UCSB Tournament in which it will face a pair of Ivy League opponents. The Lions will play in their third straight tournament and go up against their third straight ranked opponent on Friday when they take on #15 Harvard at 4 p.m. LMU then hosts Columbia on Sunday at 4 p.m.
