Las Vegas, NV- The Saint Mary's men's soccer team rallied to even the score 1-1 by halftime but eventually fell 2-1 to UC Irvine in the UNLV Rebel Classic finale Sunday afternoon from Peter Johann Field. After the day, the Gaels move to 2-3-3 on the season.
The Anteaters (5-1-1) opened the scoring in the 18th minute when Matt Murphy buried a free kick from 25-yards out.
UC Irvine then tallied the game-winner just three minutes into the second half. At the 48-minute mark, Rafael Macedo cleaned up a deflection and found net far post to hand the Anteaters their fifth win on the year.
Both teams rallied off 10 shots a piece. Diaz led the Gaels with three shots, putting all three on frame. The freshman duo of Bryan VanDoorninck and Dylan Leslie recorded two shots each with all on goal. Brad Evans and Murphy tallied three shots a piece for UC Irvine.
In his second career start, Keenen Flynn tallied six saves and allowed two goals for SMC. Kenny Schoeni recorded a game-high eight saves for UCI and allowed one goal.
Saint Mary's will return to action on Friday, September 22 against the University of San Francisco. The conference opener will begin at 4 p.m. from Saint Mary's Stadium.
