LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The LMU men's soccer team returned to Sullivan Field for a 2-1 win over Cal Baptist this afternoon. The Lions had played three straight road games, but were triumphant in the first game of a three-game home stand. Jay Singh scored his first career goal, and David Niemeyer put in the eventual game-winner. The Lions wrap up non-conference play with a 4-3 record and open WCC action on Friday, hosting Gonzaga at 4:00pm.
Singh put LMU ahead early. The Lions were awarded a free kick outside the 18 yard box, and Singh was the Lion to take it. He saw the empty far post and his low hard shot went bounced through the entire crowd and into the net to put LMU up 1-0 at 16:09.
The Lions added to their lead in the 34th minute. Jawaan Delaney found Pasquale Murrillo streaking down the left side. The freshman who was appearing in his first career game found the head of senior forward Niemeyer. The Long Beach, CA native flicked the ball to the far post to put LMU ahead 2-0.
The Lancers cut into the Lion lead in the second half. When a CBU player was taken down inside the box on a long pass, Houtan Malayeri stepped up to take the penalty kick. He converted with a shot to the right to cut the LMU lead in half.
CBU did not manage another shot on goal, and the Lions pulled out the 2-1 win.
LMU outshot Cal Baptist 12-8, led by Niemeyer with three shots. Benitez made one save to pick up his second win of the season. Josh Blanco allowed the two LMU goals in the first half, and Casey Pradmore made four saves in the second half to keep LMU at two goals.
The Lions return to action next weekend, opening conference play by hosting Gonzaga and Portland. LMU will take on the Bulldogs on Friday afternoon at 4:00pm, and host the Pilots on Sunday afternoon at 4:00pm. Sunday's game is the second of a doubleheader with the women's team who hosts USC at 1:00pm.
