USD Breaks Four Records in 11-0 Shut Out Over Rider

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's soccer team (5-1-0) posted a shut out victory Sunday afternoon defeating the Rider University Broncs (3-3-2) 11-0 at Torero Stadium. Today's win is the fourth shut out this season and also keeps San Diego undefeated at home allowing only one goal when playing at Torero Stadium. The victory also broke two team single-game records, tied one team single-game record, and broke one individual single-game record.

Today's 11 goals is a new record for most team goals scored in a single match (9-0 vs. Gonzaga on Nov. 1, 1992). The five goals in the opening period breaks the most team goals scored in the first half (4 vs. Gonzaga on Nov. 1, 1992 and again vs. Point Loma Nazarene on Sept. 6, 2000). The six goals in the second half ties the school record for most team goals scored in the second half (6 vs. Drake on Sept. 20, 2002). Today's match featured four Toreros scoring two goals each and three Toreros scoring one goal. Eight different Toreros recorded one or more assists in the match.

In the opening three minutes of the match San Diego managed to fire off three shots against Rider goalkeeper Daniel Riverso. USD's first goal came in the 14th minute when defender Sam Reeder lined up for a free kick from 35 yards away from the net. Reeder tapped the ball to forward Ciaran O'Brien who lofted the ball to the far side of the field to forward Michael Caso who headed the ball into the corner of the net from 10 yards out taking a 1-0 lead. Credit the assist to O'Brien and Reeder.

In the 30th minute of the match, Caso streaked up the far sideline with the ball booting a pass to the center to midfielder Dustin Guerrero. With a Broncs defender on him, Guerrero fired off a shot from 15 yards out past Riverso in the upper right corner of the goal for a 2-0 lead. Credit Caso with the assist.

In the 39th minute, forward Nick Leonard had the ball at the top of the penalty box weaving through defenders and passed to forward Adam Mariani who was 12 yards from the goal. Mariani took the shot landing it in the lower left corner for a 3-0 lead. Credit the assist to Leonard.

Less than a minute later forward JT Howlan found Guerrero inside the penalty box. Guerrero dribbled past a defender and was tripped up in front of the net. His second effort paid off as he got up and fired off a shot past Riverso scoring San Diego's fourth goal of the half. Credit Howlan with the assist.

In the 44th minute, San Diego got a free kick from outside the penalty box. The first shot missed and was deflected to the right where midfielder Kevin Meissner passed the ball inside the goalie box to Nick Leonard who took the shot from three yards away giving the Toreros a 5-0 lead at the end of the first half. Credit the assist to Meissner.

San Diego continued to dominate when in the 48th minute when Caso received a pass from Howlan at midfield. Caso sprinted up field with the ball past the Rider defense with Riverso charging at him to make the stop. Caso took the shot past the goalie and found the net for a 6-0 lead. Credit Howlan with the assist.

In the 59th minute, forward Ryan Guy took a shot on goal which was saved by Riverso but rebounded back to defender Tim Grey. Grey recorded his first career goal as a Torero from 10 yards out lifting San Diego to a 7-0 lead. Credit the assist to Guy.

In the 67th minute, Howlan had the ball on the far side and rocketed a centering pass to forward Eric Pohl who found himself 10 yards away from the net. Pohl took the shot which was almost saved by Riverso, but found its way into the net for an 8-0 lead. Credit Howlan with the assist.

In the 72nd minute, Guy had the ball on the far side at midfield looking to pass off the ball. He centered the ball with a pass to Mariani who took off up the field past Broncs defenders. Mariani took his shot from inside the penalty box and scored for a 9-0 lead. Credit the assist to Guy.

Less than a minute later, Howlan found Guy who dribbled up the far side of the field and taking the ball into the penalty box where he found his opportunity to score and took it bringing San Diego to a 10-0 lead.

Rider made a goalie change in the 75th minute bringing in Randall Zapolski. Mariani found Leonard in the 85th minute inside the penalty box for USD's final goal of the match as Leonard got off a shot past Zapolski for an 11-0 win.

For Rider, the Broncs took three shots against the Toreros and recorded one corner kick. Riverso had 10 goals against and six saves on the day. Zapolski had one goal against with one save.

For San Diego, Caso, Guerrero, Mariani, and Leonard all had two goals. Grey, Pohl, and Guy each had one goal. Howlan recorded a team high four assists, a new individual-single game record (Many players with 3, last accomplished by Tyler Conley vs. Drake on Sept. 20, 2002). Guy recorded two assist, while O'Brien, Reeder, Caso, Leonard, Meissner, and Mariani all recorded one assist. Goalkeeper Lance Friesz recorded one save on the day. The Toreros as a team recorded 25 shots and six corner kicks.

San Diego returns to action as they begin West Coast Conference play on Friday, September 22 at 7:00 p.m. against the University of Portland Pilots at Torero Stadium.
