Alex Christlieb scored a a one time valley of a Mark Araujo cross 20:32 into the match as St. Mary's upset defending WCC champion USF 1-0 Friday afternoon in Moraga in the opening game of West Coast Conference play.
The Dons (5-2-1, 0-1 WCC), ranked 13th in the nation, failed to score in the contest as shots by Adam Bergman and Matt Languis both hit the bottom of the crossbar and bounced down and away. USF outshot the Gaels (3-3-3, 1-0 WCC) 11-9 in the contest.
"It was not one of our better games," said Dons' head coach Erik Visser, who watched the game from the press box after being ejected in last Sunday's loss to UCLA. "We got off to a poor start in the first half and were unable to bounce back. Give credit to St. Mary's as they played a good game."
It was the second straight season that USF was upset in the league opener in Moraga by the same 1-0 score and the second straight shutout loss for the Dons who dropped a 2-0 decision at UCLA last Sunday.
Things get no easier for the Dons who host #15 Santa Clara Sunday night at Negoesco Stadium. The 7:00 p.m. game will be just the second home game for USF this season.
