SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's soccer team (3-3-0) could not pull out the win in what was a physical battle against the Brown University Brown Bears (5-0-0) that featured 44 fouls, seven yellow cards and one ejection.
The Bears struck first in the 33rd minute with a goal off of a foul shot from midfield by Rhett Bernstein. Dylan Sheehan hit a header which bounced over goalkeeper Kelin Briones and off the post for the 1-0 lead.
Two minutes later, San Diego was fouled in the penalty box for a penalty kick taken by Tannen Wels who fired off a shot to the left past Browns goalkeeper tying the match 1-1.
In the 37th minute, Brown responded when Kevin Davies passed a ball from the left side to Nick Elenz-Martin, who passed it back to Davies firing off a shot from the left corner of the goalie box into the right corner of the net for a 2-1 lead ending the first half.
In the 64th minute, Sheehan took another shot from directly in front of the net 20 yards away. The ball deflected off of teammate Kevin Davies and into the net for a 3-1 lead.
In the 80th minute, the Brown Bears were charged with a hand ball inside the penalty box. Sophomore Fabrice Gautrat lined up the penalty kick getting it past Brown's goalkeeper cutting the lead 3-2 with less than 10 minutes. San Diego however was unable to find the net to tie the match and send it to overtime.
The Bears were charged with 20 fouls to USD's 24. The Toreros out-shot Brown 14-7. Davies too four shots on goals with two goals and one assist. Sheehan took one shot on goal leading to one goal. Gautrat took two shots on goal with one goal. Wells took two shots on goal with one goal.
Brown will face UC Irvine on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. to wrap up the Adidas San Diego Classic while San Diego will face Loyola University of Chicago at 2:30 p.m.
