SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Jide Ogunbiyi and Stephen McCarthy each scored a goal to lead the No. 3 Santa Clara men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over San Diego Sunday afternoon. The win stretched the Broncos' unbeaten streak to seven games. SCU is now 7-1-2 on the season and 2-0-0 in the West Coast Conference.
Coming off a big win over Loyola Marymount in their conference opener on Friday night, the Broncos started strong against the Toreros. After withstanding some early pressure from the Toreros, SCU began to apply pressure of their own. Ogunbiyi forced a save from Kelin Briones with a header seven minutes in and two minutes later Peter Lowry also tested Briones. However, the Torero goalkeeper was up to the challenge.
Twelve minutes into the game, Ogunbiyi struck for the first goal. Brian Martin got free on the wing and sent a cross to Ogunbiyi, who tapped in his fourth of the season.
Freshman goalkeeper Kevin Klasila then kept the Toreros off the board for the remainder of the half. He made big saves on Chase Tangney and Dustin Guerrero late in the half to maintain the clean sheet.
The Broncos went up two goals 16 minutes into the second half. McCarthy, who scored his first career goal in the season opener, struck for his second goal of the year in the 61st minute and Santa Clara had the insurance goal it needed.
Klasila and the Broncos defense clamped down on the Toreros for the rest of the game, as the Broncos posted their sixth shutout of the season.
Santa Clara returns to action on Friday, Oct. 12 with a showdown against Bay Area rival, San Francisco at Buck Shaw Stadium. The match kicks off at 5 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on Fox Soccer Channel.
