Spokane, WA- The Saint Mary's men's soccer team fell to Gonzaga 4-0 in its final game of their Pacific Northwest road trip Sunday afternoon from Martin Field. The Bulldogs scored two goals in each half to earn the victory. After the day, the Gaels move to 4-5-4 overall and 2-2-1 in West Coast Conference play.
The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard early, George Josten tallied his WCC-leading seventh goal of the season at 6:51. His shot from the right side came off a cross from John Reha.
Reha came right back 76-seconds later to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. Chris Hoyd flicked a pass to Reha who found net from the right side of the box.
Gonzaga tallied another goal early in the second half. Grant Lundberg found the net at 48:22. He took a pass from Reha on the left wing and beat SMC goalkeeper Keenen Flynn one-on-one.
The Bulldogs netted their fourth and final goal at 62:02 when Bryan Mullaney scored his first goal of the season on a rebound. Austin Washington fed Tye Perdido on the right wing and Flynn came out to make the save. But the rebound went right to Mullaney who found the back of the net.
Gonzaga held a 9-7 edge in shots. Flynn had two saves for the Gaels, while Vito Higgins had four stops and a shut out for the Bulldogs.Carlos Diaz and Matthew Fitzgerald led the Gaels with two shot a piece. Lundberg led Gonzaga with three shots while Reha tallied four points on the day with a goal and two assists.
The Gaels will continue WCC play with another road contest. SMC will face off with rival Santa Clara on Friday, October 13 at 7 p.m. from Buck Shaw Stadium.
