It was the fourth straight one goal win for USF (9-3-1, 4-2 WCC) and it came against an impressive foe. The first place Dons increased their lead in the conference race, now with 12 points, two more than second place Santa Clara.
San Diego (7-4-0, 2-3 WCC), who scored 11 goals in a game earlier this season, opened the scoring when Ryan Guy scored off a rebound from close range at 49:55, after Geremy Uhl dove to knock a shot off the crossbar.
The Dons took their lead at 57:35 when Brandon McDonald scored on a 25 yard blast off a pass from Aaron Chandler. The ball dipped into the lower right corner where USD goalkeeper Kelin Briones did not have a chance to reach it. The goal was very similar to the goal he scored on the pitch last year.
USF swept for the second consecutive weekend, after defeating Gonzaga and Portland last week, they dispatched Loyola Marymount Friday and San Diego Sunday night.
"The team is playing well and with confidence right now," said Head Coach Erik Visser. "It was a difficult job coming down here and playing two rough road games. But the win was well earned against a team that will definitely contend for the NCAA tournament."
USF will host its alumni next Saturday afternoon at Negoesco StadiumThe Dons return to regular season action on October 20 when they visit Santa Clara.
