SPOKANE, Wash. - University of San Diego senior midfielder Colin Jennings scored the only goal from a corner kick by teammate Tannen Wels' corner kick at 92:35 Sunday afternoon, giving the visiting Toreros a 1-0 WCC overtime victory over the Gonzaga University Bulldogs.
The win over the Bulldogs (8-3-1, 3-1-1 WCC) is lifts the Toreros (5-6-0, 1-1-0 WCC) to a two-game winnings streak and for the second time in Torero men's soccer history, the team returns to San Diego undefeated from the great Northwest.
USD's win over Gonzaga represents the third straight over the Bulldogs and snaps Gonzaga's seven game win-streak.
Tannen Wels got the assist as Jennings scored his third goal of the season with a header that went high to the top shelf in traffic.
The Bulldogs thought they had scored the first goal of the match in the 74th minute as Philippe Garre put the ball into the net out of a melee in the box, but a hand ball was ruled and the goal was immediately waved off by the referee.Wels had almost ended the match as the seconds ticked down at the end of regulation, his shot cleared away by Bulldog defender Tim Muravez with two seconds remaining.
The Toreros out-shot the Bulldogs 12-9, half of which were on goal. San Diego also had more opportunities 6-2, connecting on the game-winner. Bulldog Keeper Vito Higgins had five saves on the night, while Briones posted three for the Toreros.
The USD victory over Gonzaga means Santa Clara University is the only undefeated team in the WCC. San Diego returns home to start a three game homestand starting with Saint Mary's on Friday, October 19 at 7:30 p.m. at Torero Stadium.
