Moraga, CA- For the second consecutive game overtime was needed to sort the outcome between the Saint Mary's soccer team and No. 17-ranked Santa Clara. This time the Broncos grabbed the victory with a goal in the beginning of overtime to edge the Gaels 2-1. After the day, SMC moves to 4-6-5 overall and 2-3-2 in West Coast Conference play.
With the score at a gridlock 1-1 tie for over 60 minutes, Santa Clara tallied the game-winner 51-seconds into overtime. Jeff Cosgriff secured the game for the Broncos with a one-touch finish off a pass from Jide Ogunbiyi from the end line.
Santa Clara was able to break the scoreless tie on its first attempt on the Gaels net. The Broncos' first shot of the game came from 35-yards out that Brian Martin was able to slip through Gael goalkeeper Brian Mason's hands for the goal in the 14th minute.
The Gaels then responded with a quick counter-attack goal. Junior Erik Robert broke loose down the left side of the field and slipped a perfect cross to the right foot of senior Mathew Fitzgerald who buried the one-timer far post for the equalizer in the 30th minute.
After the first goal by SCU, Mason came up big for SMC making key saves throughout the contest. The junior goalkeeper finished with a game-high six saves.
Offensively the Broncos out-shot the Gaels 14-10. SMC sophomore forward Carlos Diaz led the Gaels with three shots, putting two on goal. Fitzgerald and Robert followed with two shots a piece.
Martin paced the Broncos with four shots, putting all four on frame. Three other Broncos followed with two shots a piece.
Saint Mary's will continue WCC play when it heads to San Francisco for its lone game of the week. The Gaels will face off with the rival Dons on Sunday, October 22 at 7 p.m. from Negoesco Stadium.
