SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Senior Bobby Burling scored twice in the first eight minutes to lead Loyola Marymount to a 3-2 win over San Diego in West Coast Conference men's soccer action this afternoon at Torero Stadium. The two goals by Burling, plus a goal by freshman Wilkie Johnson gave LMU a 3-0 lead in the eighth minute of the game. San Diego scored twice in the first half, and the Lions kept the game scoreless in the second half for the win. LMU improves to 7-5-2, 3-2-2 in WCC play.

A forward for his first three years in Westchester, Burling has been playing as a central defender this season, but started today's game at forward to get LMU's offense going. He made the coaching staff look very smart when he scored in the third minute of the match. Burling found himself one-on-one with Torero goalkeeper Lance Friesz. His shot to the left went past Friesz, giving LMU the quick 1-0 lead. Three minutes later, Trini Gomez sent a corner kick into the Torero goal box where Johnson headed the ball past the keeper for a 2-0 lead.

That goal was followed by a third goal in the eighth minute when Adam Sloustcher passed a ball up field to Burling who was inside the penalty box. Burling dribbled through traffic and fired off a shot past Friesz for a 3-0 lead. Today is the senior's 22nd birthday, and he celebrated with his fourth goal of the season.

It was in the 20th minute that San Diego responded when midfielder Michael Caso sent a ball down field to forward Ryan Guy who fired off a shot into the corner cutting LMU's lead 3-1. In the 39th minute, Guy returned the favor when he centered a ball right to Caso who headed the ball past LMU goalkeeper Robert Flores for a score of 3-2 going into halftime.

Although San Diego outshot LMU 6-2 in the second half, Flores made three saves to preserve the Lion victory. Flores finished with five saves on the day.

For the Toreros, Caso finished with a team high three shots on goal, one goal and one assist. Guy finished the afternoon with two shots on goal, one goal and one assist as well. San Diego outshot the Lions 13-8 overall. Friesz finished with three goals against and one save.

With the two goals on the day, Burling now has four goals for the season. He has 15 career goals and is now in sole possession of sixth place in the LMU record books. He has nine points for the season, which gives him 44 for his career- fifth all time in LMU soccer history.

The Lions stay in possession of third place in the conference with a 3-2-2 record and are undefeated on the road in WCC action. LMU looks to use that strong road play next weekend when the Lions head to the Northwest for games with Portland and Gonzaga.
