Los Angeles, CA- The Saint Mary's men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 double-overtime loss against Loyola Marymount Friday afternoon from Sullivan Field. The Lions netted the game-winner with less than two minutes remaining in the contest. After the day, the Gaels fall to 4-8-5 overall and 2-5-2 in West Coast Conference play.
The Lions' Nick Blanco buried a loose ball in the 109th minute to hand LMU a thrilling 2-1 double-overtime victory. The play was set up on a cross which was headed over to Blanco by Trini Gomez and Bobby Burling.
Down 1-0 with less than two minutes remaining in regulation the Gaels evened the score to extend the game to extra time. Senior forward Matthew Fitzgerald knotted the game at one when he flicked LMU goalkeeper Robert Flores on a long pass from SMC goalkeeper Brian Mason.
The goal marks the fourth on the season for the Castro Valley native and the 12th of his career which ties him with Derek Youpel for seventh all-time at SMC.
After a scoreless first half, LMU broke the silence with a goal in the 57th minute. Junior Ybarra drilled a shot from 45-yards out in the upper corner to hand the Lions the lead.
The Lions out-shot the Gaels 23-17. Offensively SMC was led by freshman Dylan Leslie. The newcomer rallied off five shots, putting four on frame. Fellow freshman Bryan VanDoorninck and Fitzgerald each recorded three shots apiece.
LMU was led by Blanco's seven shots while Diego Barrera added six. In net, Mason recorded a game-high 10 saves while Flores tallied seven on the afternoon.
Saint Mary's will continue its Southern California road trip against San Diego on Sunday, October 29. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 PM from Torero Stadium.
