Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's men's soccer team jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but the San Francisco Dons scored the final two goals of the game to post a 2-1 West Coast Conference win over the Gaels on Sunday afternoon at Garaventa Field.
Saint Mary's (6-6-1/2-4-1 WCC) jumped out to an early lead when Corey Heldreth scored his first goal of the season and third of his career. Just 44 seconds into the match, the 6-4 senior defender out-jumped the San Francisco (6-7-1/2-4-1 WCC) defenders to head a ball into the goal. Junior midfielder Justin Kim's took a throw-in from the right sideline. Kim's throw made it into the middle of the box where Heldreth redirected the ball into the far left corner of the goal, giving SMC an early 1-0 lead.
USF answered in the 25th minute when Ben Dessard netted his first goal of the season. Daniel DeGeer played a ball into the box from the left sideline where Dessard collected the cross. Dessard had enough time to set up and fire a shot to the far post, past SMC goalkeeper Keenan Flynn.
DeGeer played a key role in the game-winning goal in the 87th minute. DeGeer took a corner kick from the right corner, and with the ball swinging to the middle of the field, USF defender Brandon McDonald out-jumped the Gael defenders to head the ball inside the left post for the game winner with 3:53 remaining in the game.
Saint Mary's goalkeeper Keenan Flynn made five saves in the game, while USF keeper Eric Conner made four stops. The Dons out-shot the Gaels 10-7 and held a 5-2 advantage on corner kicks.
Saint Mary's will return to West Coast Conference play with a road game against the Portland Pilots on Friday, November 2 beginning at 7 p.m.
