San Diego, CA- The Saint Mary's men's soccer team succumbed to a 4-0 loss to the University of San Diego Sunday afternoon from Torero Stadium. USD recorded two goals in each half to secure the victory. After the day, the Gaels fall to 4-9-5 overall and 2-6-2 in West Coast Conference play.
The Toreros opened the scoring early with a goal in the eighth minute. Eric Pohl tallied the goal when he followed a Ryan Guy rebounded shot.
In the 14th minute USD tacked on its second goal. Guy was on the scoring end of the second goal when he put away a shot far post from the right side of the box.
In the 50th minute the Toreros added their third goal of the match. JT Howlin found net when he drilled a header off a Kevin Meissner cross.
USD finished its scoring barrage in the 80th minute on a Ciaran O'Brien goal. O'Brien bent net from 12-yards out off a Chase Tangay set up.
The Toreros out-shot the Gaels 15-13. Offensively SMC was led by sophomore forward Carlos Diaz and freshman forward Mark Araujo. The duo rallied off three shots apiece. Guy led USD with four shots, putting three on frame.
In net junior goalkeeper Brian Mason tallied four saves while Lance Friesz combined with Kelin Briones for the clean slate. Friesz tallied three saves in 76 minutes of action.
Saint Mary's will return home and face Gonzaga on Friday, November 3 at 2 p.m. from Saint Mary's Stadium.
