Toreros Drop Heartbreaker to Portland In 109th Minute

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's soccer team (8-8-1, 5-3-1 WCC) played 109 minutes to a scoreless draw in an exciting double overtime match against the University of Portland Pilots (8-4-5, 5-1-4 WCC) as each team finished with two yellow cards and a more than 30 fouls between the two teams in the first 90 minutes of play.

Both teams had numerous opportunities in the match to score. USD out-shot Portland 14-27, and the toreros recorded nine shots on goal to Portland's two in regulation. The two teams battled in a very physical match as each team fought for possession.

The Toreros took the Pilots through the first overtime period with one solid look by JT Howlan from 15 yards out, but his shot went wide.

In the 109th minute, USD came in with a hard slide tackle against the Pilots on the near side. Michael Gavin lined up the shot from 35 yards out as San Diego lined up a wall 10 yards away. Gavin sent a shot into the goalie box towards the lower left corner which slipped past USD goal keeper Kelin Briones for the 1-0 golden goal.

San Diego posted 15 shots to Portland's 10. Portland keeper Austin Guerrero tallied nine saves to Briones' three.

The Toreros continue their final homestand on Sunday afternoon when they take on the Gonzaga University Bulldogs at 2:00 p.m. from Torero Stadium. Pregame festivities will include the annual senior ceremony prior to kickoff.
