SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Kellen Wantulok scored late in the first half for No. 3 Santa Clara to lead the Broncos to a 2-1 victory over San Francisco in West Coast Conference soccer action at Negoesco Stadium. SCU has now gone unbeaten in its past 14 games with a 10-0-4 record during that stretch. Santa Clara is now 12-1-4 (7-0-2 in the WCC) on the season and can wrap up the conference title with a victory on Sunday night against Saint Mary's.
The Dons got out of the gate quickly and surprised the Broncos with a goal just 19 minutes into the match off a set piece. Daniel DeGeer sent a free kick into the box and the Dons' Connor Chinn got up and knocked a header past Broncos goalkeeper Kevin Klasila for his sixth goal of the season.
SCU did not waste anytime tying the score on a free kick of their own. A ball was sent into the box and a Dons' defender leapt to try and clear it out, but ended up deflecting it past goalkeeper Eric Conner to tie the game at a goal apiece.
The Broncos kept the pressure on in the first half and they took the lead with eight minutes to go before halftime. Jeff Cosgriff found Sean Danzeiser running behind the defense deep in the Dons' territory. Danzeiser then slid a pass to Wantulok, who put away his first career goal to put SCU up 2-1.
San Francisco could not break through the tough Broncos' defense in the second half, as SCU ground out a 2-1 victory to keep its recent domination over the Dons going. SCU has now won five in a row over its Bay Area rivals and are 15-1-1 in the past 17 games against USF.
The Broncos host Saint Mary's on Senior Night on Sunday, Nov. 11 to close out their home slate. The match against the Gaels kicks off at 7 p.m. PT at Buck Shaw Stadium. Santa Clara will honor seniors Brian Curry, Matt Hatzke, Peter Lowry, Matt Marquess and Jamil Roberts prior to the match.
