SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The No. 3 Santa Clara Broncos captured the school's 10th West Coast Conference title with a 4-1 win over Saint Mary's at Buck Shaw Stadium. Peter Lowry, Stephen McCarthy, Ricky Character and David Castellanos all scored goals to stretch the Broncos' unbeaten streak to 15 games. SCU, which also won the WCC title last season, is now 13-1-4 and 8-0-2 in conference play. The victory also clinched an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament for Santa Clara.
Peter Lowry got SCU on the board early with a goal in the first 10 minutes of the match. Jalil Anibaba found Aaron Clubb at the top of the box and he re-directed a pass to Lowry. Lowry took a touch and then unloaded a shot into the far lower corner past Gaels goalkeeper Keenan Flynn for a 1-0 lead.
Lowry set up Sean Danzeiser for a great opportunity in the 28th minute. After receiving the ball 30 yards from goal, Lowry beat a defender and then slipped a ball through for Danzeiser. Danzeiser ran past one defender and froze the goalkeeper, but his shot was blocked by the defense.
Sophomore Jeff Cosgriff tested Flynn with a header with nine minutes left in the half after some great work by Matt Marquess on the left wing. Marquess got himself some space inside the box and sent a cross to the back post for Cosgriff, who dove and headed the ball on frame. Flynn came flying across the goalmouth to make an acrobatic save and deny the Broncos.
SCU grabbed a 2-0 lead early in the second half off a corner kick. Lowry sent the corner into the heart of the penalty box and the ball deflected down to Stephen McCarthy in front of goal. He calmly buried a shot past Flynn to put the Broncos in command of the match.
Lowry was a part of the Broncos third tally as well. The senior captain picked up a loose ball on the left wing and then blew by a defender before driving a cross into the box. Ricky Character timed his run perfectly and touched the ball to the far post for his first career goal and a 3-0 Bronco lead.
David Castellos stretched the lead to 4-0 with a goal in the 75th minute. Just moments after stepping on the field as a sub, Castellanos got on the end of a Ryan Brown cross and nodded a header past Flynn. The goal was the second of the season for Castellanos.
The Gaels would pull one back with 13 minutes remaining on Kurt Thompson's first goal of the season. Michael Lawler collected a pass on the left wing and cut inside before passing to Thompson at the top of the box. Thompson picked out the lower corner and buried a shot past Joseph Buttitta.
Santa Clara finishes the regular season next weekend in the Pacific Northwest. SCU takes on Gonzaga on Friday, Nov. 16 at 1 p.m. PT in Spokane, Wash. The Broncos then head to Portland to take on the Pilots on Sunday, Nov. 18 at 3 p.m. PT.
