Santa Clara, CA - The number 3-ranked Santa Clara Broncos scored the first four goals of the game en route to a 4-1 win over the Saint Mary's men's soccer team on Sunday night from Buck Shaw Stadium. SCU's Peter Lowry had a goal and two assists to lead the Broncos.
Santa Clara (13-1-4/8-0-2 WCC) got on the scoreboard early, when Lowry netted his goal eighth goal of the season on a long shot just 7:42 into the contest. The score remained scoreless until the second half, and then Santa Clara broke the game wide open with three goals before Saint Mary's (6-8-2/2-6-2) answered.
With the score 1-0 in favor of the Broncos, Stephen McCarthey took a pass from Lowry and beat SMC goalkeeper Keenan Flynn. The goal at the 52:17 mark was the first of the season for McCarthey. Flynn, who made eight saves in the match, was beat again at 60:20 when Ricky Character scored his first goal of the season of a cross from the left wing from Lowry.
The Broncos improved their lead to 4-0 when Davis Castellanos scored at 74:11 for his first goal of the year. Saint Mary's finally got on the scoreboard at 76:11 when freshman Michael Lawlor connected Kurt Thompson for his first collegiate goal. The assist by Lawlor was the first of his career.
Santa Clara controlled the tempo of the game as it outshot the Gaels 21-8 and held an 8-3 advantage on corner kicks. Broncos goalkeeper Joseph Buttitta recorded the win as he recorded four saves while allowing one goal.
Saint Mary's will return to action on Friday, November 16 with 2 p.m. game against the San Diego Toreros. The game between SMC and San Diego will be played at Saint Mary's Stadium.
