Box Score

Moraga, CA - Tim Grey scored two goals, including the game-winner to help the San Diego Toreros post a 3-1 West Coast Conference win over the Saint Mary's men's soccer team on Friday afternoon from Garaventa Field.

The game got off to a quick start as the Gaels (6-9-2/2-7-2 WCC) had two shots on goal in the first two and a half minutes. The Toreros (10-8-1/7-3-1 WCC) responded with an attack of their own, and on its first shot of the game, San Diego scored the first goal of the game 2:55 into the match.

The goal was scored when midfielder Eddie Ahman dribbled the ball into the right corner. Ahman made a perfect cross into the center of the box, where J.T. Howland put the pass away with a header to the far post, beating SMC goalkeeper Keenan Flynn.

San Diego held its 1-0 lead into halftime, but the Gaels outshot the Toreros 6-3 in the first half, had four shots on goal compared to two by USD. Both teams had one corner kick at the intermission.

San Diego extended their lead to 2-0 just 2:29 into the second half, scoring its second goal much like the first. This time it was Howland who made the pass to Tim Grey, who finished the play with a header inside the left post.

The USD lead reached 3-0 when Grey scored his second goal of the game and of the season. For the third time in the game, San Diego scored on a header, but this cross came off a free kick from just outside the left corner of the penalty box. Fabrice Gautrat swung the left-footed cross into the box, and Grey out-jumped a Saint Mary's defender to push the ball into the back of the net.

Saint Mary's answered in the 80th minute when Justin Kim scored his first goal of the season. Just like the San Diego goals, Kim also scored on a header. The shot came following a corner kick off the foot of Eric Robert from the right corner.

In the final box score, Saint Mary's held a 14-7 advantage in shots. San Diego's pair of goalkeepers Kelin Briones and Mike Sinodis combined to make a total of eight saves for the Toreros. SMC keeper Flynn made just one save in the match and allowed all three goals.

Saint Mary's will wrap-up its 3007 season on Sunday afternoon against the Loyola Marymount Lions. The senior day game will begin at 2:30 p.m. at Garaventa Field. Saint Mary's will recognize three seniors, David Blanchard, Eric Robert and Brian Mason before the start of the game, as each will be making their final home appearance on Sunday.
