-Baltimore, MD.- Real Salt Lake used the 52nd overall pick to select Portland Pilots senior Jarad vanSchaik in the 2011 Major League Soccer SuperDraft, which took place on Thursday at the Baltimore Convention Center. vanSchaik, a midfielder from Tualatin, Ore., will join the team in Salt Lake City, Utah, next week.
"This really is a dream come true, vanSchaik said. I don't think I've ever been more excited about anything in my life. I'm just thankful for the opportunity and I'm ready to work as hard as I can.
vanSchaik said the days leading up to the draft were pretty quiet until he heard Real Salt Lake might be interested. He received a call from head coach Jason Kreis on draft day before the team took him in the third round.
vanSchaik will be reunited with former Portland standout Collen Warner, who is a second-year midfielder for Real Salt Lake.
Collen and I talked about it jokingly the other day," vanSchaik said about possibly ending up in Salt Lake. "Then it happened, so I'm definitely excited about that.
vanSchaik is a two-time All-West Coast Conference First Team selection, including this past fall. He also landed on the league's all-freshman team in 2007. vanSchaik led the squad this year with eight goals and 19 points, while also registering three assists. He concluded his career on The Bluff with 13 goals, 14 assists and 40 points.
The UP program is run as professionally as possible, so in that regard it truly prepares you to enter the environment at the next level," said vanSchaik. "Portland has been great, and as I got older the more I thought that maybe I could play pro some day. It's definitely a great feeling to be where I am now."
