Moraga, CA- Former Saint Mary's soccer standout Matthew Fitzgerald was selected by the California Victory in the 2007 USL First Division College Player Draft. The Castro Valley, CA native was the second selection in the second round (15th overall) and will stay close to home as the Victory play their home games in Kezar Stadium in San Francisco.
"It's a dream come true," Fitzgerald said. "This is the first step and I am really excited to keep playing and to make a career of professional soccer."
Fitzgerald is one of the most decorated players to sport the Gaels uniform. Fitzgerald earned four-straight All-WCC accolades, including three first-team selections in his four-year career. Fitzgerald was a Third-Team All-West Region selection in 2005 and was also named the WCC Freshman of the Year in 2003.
"Matt had an outstanding career at Saint Mary's," head coach Adam Cooper said. "He wanted to play professionally some day and he worked extremely hard to get to where he is. We couldn't be happier for him."
The midfielder finished his senior season with a team-high 11 points on four goals and three assists. Fitzgerald ranks third all-time at Saint Mary's in assists with 17 and fifth in points with 41 and seventh in goals with 12. The Castro Valley native played in 77 career games which ranks 4th all-time at SMC.
Fitzgerald is the second player from the 2006 senior class to take their game to the professional ranks. Former defender Desmond Brooks was selected by Chivas USA in the MLS Supplemental Draft.
Fitzgerald and the rest of the California Victory will open its 2007 campaign against the Vancouver Whitecaps. Kickoff is slated for Saturday, April 28 at 10 p.m. from Swangard Stadium in Vancouver, BC.
